2 comments27Lisa Holmesabout 1 year agoRe-Fund Boulder Universal's Mentor Position
Please re-fund the mentor position at Boulder Universal. BU's population increased by 400% for the 2020-21 school year, and the Boulder Universal staff rose to the occasion to provide quality academics and SEL support to 800 additional students during a worldwide pandemic. BVSD says it is committed to making SEL a priority. But is it really? In the midst of a pandemic and in the wake of a mass shooting that has rocked our entire community, the district has cut in half the one position at BU whose primary purpose is to offer SEL supports to its students. Please reconsider this decision and opt to retain the much-needed SEL support that Boulder Universal mentors provide.

Vision and hearing screening is an important part of making learning work for our students, especially those from minority and low-income families. This is not the right time to reduce staff to just four people, especially after a year of very limited screening during COVID. It is not fair to our students to rely on untrained parent volunteers for this important activity. Restore funding to Health Services so that they may support our students using trained BVSD staff. Students cannot learn when they have severely blurred vision or are hearing impaired.
